When I began my career as a frontline Child and Youth Care Practitioner, I never imagined the journey would lead me to serving as Executive Director of the Shelburne County Youth Health & Support Association. What I did know then, and what continues to guide me today, is that every young person deserves to feel safe, supported, and connected to a community that believes in them.
Working directly with youth taught me that meaningful change doesn't happen in isolation. Healthy youth are supported by healthy families, strong relationships, and communities that are willing to come together to remove barriers and create opportunities. That belief has shaped every step of my career and continues to influence the direction of our organization.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of helping grow SCYHSA into an organization that responds not only to the needs of youth but to the needs of our entire community. From establishing the Barrington Community Care & Recovery Centre to expanding youth outreach, food security initiatives, wellness programming, and collaborative partnerships, our work has always been guided by listening to our community and responding to its evolving needs.
Every day, we see the incredible resilience of the children, youth, young adults, and families we serve. We also see the barriers they face. That is why our work extends beyond programs alone. We strive to create spaces where people feel a sense of belonging, where relationships are strengthened, and where support is accessible without judgment. Whether someone visits us for a meal, a youth program, mental health support, community connection, or simply a safe place to be, our goal is for them to leave knowing they matter.
None of this work happens alone. It is made possible through the dedication of our staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, funders, donors, and community partners who share our commitment to building a healthier, more connected Shelburne County. Together, we continue to challenge the status quo, seek innovative solutions, and respond to the changing needs of our community with compassion, collaboration, and purpose.
It is an honour to serve this community and to work alongside so many passionate individuals who believe, as I do, that when we invest in people, we strengthen our entire community.
Thank you for believing in our mission and for helping us create a place where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Warmly,
Amy MacKinnon
